Is it toxic to heat a disposable lunch box?

Recently, the epidemic has rebounded in many places, but everyone has a strong sense of prevention. Some netizens worry that the takeout package will be contaminated by viruses, so they will heat the meals and disposable lunch boxes in the microwave oven.

However, online one-time lunch box heating is toxic, and long-term consumption of one-time lunch boxes may lead to cancer. So, is disposable lunch box heating really toxic?

The toxicity of disposable lunch boxes depends on the material. At present, polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS) are the main disposable lunch boxes in circulation.

The disposable lunch box is made of polypropylene (PP), and the high temperature does not exceed 120 ℃. It can be put into the microwave oven or steamer.

However, polystyrene (PS) lunch boxes, i.e. disposable polystyrene foam lunch boxes, can only be heated to 90 ℃. After heating above 90 ℃, styrene will be released into food, which will be harmful to liver and kidney functions and central nervous system. Long term use may even cause cancer.

Some enterprises will also use polypropylene materials to balance costs through the use of polypropylene boxes. This is why people sometimes see the lunch box cover melting and deformation, or even some small holes, after taking out the disposable lunch box from the microwave oven.

If the disposable lunch box with this splicing material is encountered, it is safer to take off the box cover or replace the self use lunch box cover for heating.
